Gender Equity Program

ACEVic has been a proud consortia member of the Workforce Training Innovation Funded Course in Gender Equity project, along with LLOs Yarrawonga Education and Training and Coonara Community House. The Victorian Government funded the Gender Equity Training Project in direct response to findings from the Royal Commission into Family Violence, which identified a lack of formal training in gender equity across many sectors and industries.

The course is the first of its kind in Australia. Minister for Training and Skills and Higher Education Hon. Gayle Tierney and Minister for Women Hon. Gabrielle Williams met with students and project partners to hear about the program’s success. Find out more about the program here

Ministerial Statement on the Future of Adult and Community Education in Victoria 2020-25

The Minister for Training and Skills and the Minister for Higher Education, the Hon Gayle Tierney MP, has released a Ministerial Statement outlining a six-year reform agenda for adult community education in Victoria.

The statement recognises that adult and community education plays an integral role in Victoria’s broader education sector. Victoria leads Australia in providing accessible and tailored lifelong learning opportunities for adult learners seeking to develop the skills they need for work, further study, and to participate fully in the Victorian community.

Throughout the year ACEVic, has participated in consultations with DET and Minister’s Tierney’s office, providing feedback and recommendations to help inform the statement.

ACEVic supports the Ministerial Statement and the aim to fulfil the Victorian Government’s commitment to uniting the adult community education sector with a focus on learners, and to build recognition of the distinct and invaluable role the sector plays.

It establishes a reform agenda for the six years 2020 to 2025, focusing the Adult, Community and Further Education Board and the adult community education sector on adult literacy, numeracy, employability and digital skills training.

It also identifies a strengthened role for the sector in supporting students to enter and successfully complete further education and training and in upskilling and reskilling low-skilled workers who may be vulnerable to becoming unemployed as work changes.

ACEVic Deputy Chair -Felicity Williams attends Australasian Corrections Education Association (ACEA) Conference

ACEVic Deputy Chair, Felicity Williams, attended and presented at the Australasian Corrections Education Association (ACEA) Conference in October. She provided an insight into the Finding Strengths project The Centre has commenced, which involves supporting people on community corrections orders to identify and manage their learning disorder (e.g. ADHD or dyslexia) in order to assist them in becoming more employable.

The conference provided insights into the creative and innovative approaches VET providers throughout Australia and internationally are applying improve outcomes for people within the justice system. Keynote speakers included Gray Poehnell from Canada who spoke about his philosophy of having a different conversation with people from disadvantaged and trauma backgrounds about jobs and employment. His view is that the normal middle-class conversation around ‘careers’ simply doesn’t resonate for First Nations and other marginalised groups. Facilitating discussions around dreams and supporting a holistic approach that cultivates hope, creativity, imagination, and career integrity is more effective.

The conference also introduced the need to address learning disorders and difficulties, such as dyslexia, within the justice population. Rosie Martin, a speech pathologist in Tasmania who has undertaken work in this area in Risdon Prison, spoke about not only assisting prisoners to develop literacy skills but also their voice.

It was great to see our Minister Gayle Tierney and ACFE Board Chair Maria Peters attend the dinner. Minister Tierney spoke about her passion for the role of education in changing people’s lives and reflected on her time as Minister for Corrections.
